Your Step-by-Step Method to Escaping Bad Positions in BJJ
There’s nothing worse than being stuck under your opponent, getting smashed and being so tired that you can’t breathe. On the bottom, you’ve lost the initiative, your energy slips away before you practically give your opponent the submission… and then you feel like an idiot.
The problem is that pin escapes are often taught piecemeal: one random technique at a time. Learning this way requires you to have a phenomenal memory under stress – and a whole lot of natural athleticism. This approach might be OK for super athletes, but it just doesn’t work for most people.
Most people do MUCH better if they’re shown what to do systematically, starting with the principles, movements and strategies. Then their techniques work again and again.
Help is on the way! I’m releasing No Gi Pin Escapes, the brand new Grapplearts instructional that’ll absolutely change how people learn and use pin escapes. This is based on 38 years of studying, teaching and training jiu-jitsu with some of the best instructors in the world.
No Gi Pin Escapes is my brand new, 7-volume, instant-access instructional LOADED with action steps that are chunked into digestible blocks of information, with concepts and strategies that make it easy to remember what to do next.
It doesn’t matter if you’re skinny or fat, old or inflexible, weak or out of shape, you WILL get much, much better at escaping from the bottom.
No Gi Pin Escapes will show you the tricks to escaping from every major pinning position, including mount, side control, knee ride, north-south and more. You’ll also learn the drills, concepts, and strategies to make these techniques smooth and instinctive.
Having super solid escapes is the key to good jiu-jitsu. Defense wins championships, and that’s because a good defense keeps you in the game long enough to win.
Everybody screws up and ends up on the bottom sometimes, but not everyone has to stay there.
If you’ve ever just wanted to give up when your opponent gets a dominant position, then this is for you. I guarantee that it will change your game.

What’s In No Gi Pin Escapes?
Volume 1, Pin Escapes Concepts and Principles
Escaping pins can seem complicated. After all, you’re starting at a disadvantage underneath your opponent who might be a lot bigger and stronger than you. It’s also hard to remember what to do next when it’s hard to breath and you’re fighting off submissions.
The answer is to start with first principles. A conceptual approach speeds up the learning process, allows you to retain the techniques better, makes your responses faster when you’re rolling, and allows you to adapt on the fly when something unexpected happens.
Volume 1 of No Gi Pin Escapes gives you the most important concepts you need to feel confident you can escape or reverse any pin. These are the principles I use every time I find myself (or deliberately put myself) in bad positions while doing jiu-jitsu. They’ve been invaluable for my own training, and I’m sure they’ll help you too!
Volume 2, Drills and Solo Movements
Most techniques have a core movement upon which everything else depends, and it’s amazing how often training that movement in isolation a few times will accelerate the learning process. I’ve seen students break through sticking points again and again using this approach, going from frustration to success in just a few repetitions.
When it comes to pin escapes, however, it’s not as simple as monotonously doing the same bridging from side to side drills and endlessly shrimping down the mat. That’s lazy teaching; the truth is that there are many variations of bridging and many different types of shrimping and if you use the wrong variation in sparring, the escape won’t work.
Doing just a few reps of the specific movement you need is much more productive than endlessly repping junk volume of not-quite-the-right movement. That’s why Volume 2 gives you 27 different laser-focused micro drills to instantly improve your ability to get out from under your opponent.
Volume 3, Escaping Side Control
Side Control is the hub of the top game in BJJ. Of all the pinning positions in jiu-jitsu, it’s likely that you’ll be spending more time here than anywhere else.
If you’re on the bottom of Side Control then you’re vulnerable to an absolutely bewildering barrage of chokes, armlocks and leglocks, not to mention getting mounted or having your back taken.
Therefore, you need to know how to stay safe on the bottom of Side Control, shut down attacks, and escape no matter what the other guy is doing to shut you down. You’ll learn all this and more in Volume 3 of No Gi Pin Escapes. The techniques and strategies covered here could change your game forever.
Volume 4, Escaping Knee Ride
The Knee Ride is a horrible position. Here your opponent spikes all his weight down through his knee into your diaphragm; it’s painful, exhausting, and makes you want to tap out from pressure alone. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he’s also super-mobile in this position, able to spin into submissions, the mount, or your back at will.
The good news is that there are very effective techniques to greatly diminish the pressure, reverse the position, and make your opponent reconsider his life choices.
In Volume 4 you’ll learn the highest percentage escapes and reversals that work repeatedly against highly skilled grapplers. Study these techniques and you’ll actually look forward to your opponent going to Knee Ride because you’ll be able to turn the tables on him almost instantly.
Volume 5, Escaping the Mount
The Mount is the classic attacking position in jiu-jitsu. On the bottom of Mount your arms and neck are very vulnerable. All your opponent needs to do is invade the space between your upper arm and body and now you’re only a few inevitable transitions away from being on the wrong side of a powerful armbar or a vicious choke.
Being on the bottom of Mount is even worse when there are strikes involved: how many fights in the UFC have ended suddenly and violently after a flurry of fists rained down from above? Ignorance of the escapes is NOT an option when you’re about to get punched in the head!
The ability to escape the Mount is an absolutely critical, non-negotiable area of jiu-jitsu. In Volume 5 of No Gi Pin Escapes, we go deep into the most effective techniques and strategies to get you out from under this pin as fast as possible.
Volume 6, Escaping North-South
The North-South position occurs when the grappler on top pivots to a perpendicular pin; if you’re on the bottom then he’s on top with his head pointing directly towards your feet. From here you’re very vulnerable to Kimura armlocks, straight armbars, north-south chokes, and even to having your back taken.
This pin is seeing a particular surge in popularity right now, especially in elite competition. That’s because as competitors improve their ability to put opponents back into guard, their opponents circle further away from the legs to use the North-South to control and attack.
If you train without the gi then you absolutely need good answers for the North-South. In Volume 6, you’ll learn the highest percentage North-South escapes being used in elite competition today, broken down into easy-to-follow steps that anyone can do.
Volume 7, Escaping Kesa Gatame
There are two major variations of Kesa Gatame – a Judo pinning position that has been incorporated into jiu-jitsu – and both of them absolutely suck for the person on the bottom.
In the first variation (Kuzure Kesa Gatame) the top person switches his hips and uses a strong underhook to control the far side of his opponent’s body. This pin is frequently used to counter fundamental side control escapes, so the better your pin escapes get in general the more you should be looking out for this specific pin.
The second variation is an infinitely more sophisticated version of the schoolyard headlock. It’s used at the highest levels of Olympic Judo, in MMA, and as a submission to tap out some of the best grapplers in BJJ history. The amount of pressure it puts on the neck, chest, and diaphragm is ridiculous, and you might have to tap out because you can’t breathe.
In Volume 7 of No Gi Pin Escapes, you’ll learn the very best battle-tested escapes for both versions of Kesa Gatame.
