The Berimbolo is an incredibly powerful technique in modern BJJ. It’s both a way of finalising a sweep and completely bypassing your opponent’s guard with a single technique.
Imagine not only being able to easily sweep your opponent from your open guard, but NOT having to fight your way past his guard. Instead you directly teleport to a dominant, match-ending position such as mount or rear mount, bypassing his legs altogether.
Well, that’s the power of the Berimbolo, and you can’t really do modern BJJ without an understanding of this technique.
You don’t necessarily have to add it to your repertoire (although it’s not as difficult as it seems – click here for an intro to the berimbolo), but you DO have to understand what’s going on in case someone tries to use it on you.
In this new video BJJ black belt (and friend) Elliott Bayev shows some advanced finishes to the so-called ‘Sit-down Sweep, which is the usual starting position for the Berimbolo sequence.
If you pay attention you’ll learn how to follow up the Berimbolo and get rear mount on your opponent, full mount, or into a powerful leg drag guard pass position. Plus Elliott breaks down the concept of technical progressions and which variations of this technique to learn first, which is also very cool.
This excerpt comes from the Spider Guard Masterclass Series 2: Double Feet on Biceps Spider Guard instructional app which is available for iOS and Android devices.

Then, once you’ve mastered those fundamentals you’ll learn lots of intermediate and advanced techniques, like the one covered in the video below. So this is just a taste of the type of moves you’ll soon be able to pull off if you decide to make the Spider Guard one of your areas of study!
