I don’t usually have to spend a lot of time sitting around and dreaming up new crazy techniques to put onto my Youtube channel…
Typically all I have to do is look back at the last couple of training sessions I’ve done and something obvious to talk about pops right out at me.
In the case of today’s video, I was working with a friend who was having trouble with his guard getting passed way too easily.
Even though he’d fight, fight, fight to get the collar and sleeve grip his sparring partners were blowing right past his legs and he was ending up on the bottom again and again.
Not cool. Not fun.
Anyway, when I asked him to show me what he was doing I could immediately feel what the problem was…
It turns out that it’s a VERY common problem for all kinds of guard, especially the open guard…
But the good news is that there’s a relatively simple solution!
To solve this problem once and for all I shot the video below with Ritchie Yip. It’s a drill that’ll fix the problem, keep your opponent off balance, and make it hard for him to pass your guard.
And, oh yeah, this drill will make it way easier for you to set up your own sweeps and submissions from the bottom.

P.S. If you haven’t done so already, I strongly suggest that you go and download my Roadmap for BJJ app for your smartphone or tablet.
This video-based app is free. The focus of the app to teach you the positional hierarchy that makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu such an unbelievably effective martial art.
With this app you’ll know how to focus your training and where you should be trying to get to in every position on the ground.
The Roadmap app also includes deep dives into the closed guard, open guard, and half guard positions.
It has received tons really good reviews in the app stores (for which I am grateful) from people training BJJ, MMA, or submission grappling.
