One of my favorite instructionals is called ‘The Single Leg X Guard Masterclass.’
This material took two years to research and develop, and it contains a ton of my best material to control and sweep your opponent. The full product includes step-by-step SLX entries, variations, combinations, drills, sweeps, and counters.
This page below gives you the ‘QuickStart’ section from that product.
The Quickstart is designed to give you a really good preview of the overall material, as well as some of the most important SLX concepts and techniques so that you can get some good results right away!
In the full product you’ll get a full gameplan for this guard position – check out the full version of the Single Leg X Guard here
Good luck with your training!

4 Part Quickstart Guide to the Single Leg X Guard
Part 1: The Essentials of the SLX Position
Here’s some of what you’ll learn in the first quickstart lesson above…
- The hidden details that make the SLX one of the most versatile sweeping positions in BJJ and submission grappling
- How to be so HEAVY on your opponent’s leg that he feels like he’s dragging around one of those old school prisoner ball and chains
- The difference between ‘ballerina feet’ and ‘jiu-jitsu feet’ (hint one is for effective distance management)
- How to use the SLX in an MMA or self defense situation to defend against strikes
- Two ways to deal with heavy forward pressure from an opponent who’d love to turn you into a pretzel
- Three effective grips to control your opponent’s leg, and why they work
- And more
Part 2: The Core Drill
What you’ll learn in the video above is the Core Drill for the SLX – it’s the single most important thing you can do to master this position.
It’ll teach you…
- Critical transitions between different SLX-adjacent guards
- Entries so you can get in and out of SLX at will
- Counters for when your opponent tries to escape the position
- Offbalancing techniques that’ll make sweeps and submissions 10 times easier
- And more
This is really critical stuff!
Part 3: The Most Important SLX Sweep
In the video above we’re learning all about the Twist Sweep which is the most important SLX sweep.
I’ve hit this attack so many times it’s not even funny. So it works, but it also sets up a number of very powerful followups.
You may have seen this sweep before, but I hope that the conceptual breakdown and the level of detail I go into will sharpen this particular weapon in your sweeping arsenal!
Watch this video and then go sweep your training partner with it!
Part 4: The Other Most Important Sweep
In jiu-jitsu as in life you always, always, always need a Plan B.
This technique involves transitioning from the single leg X guard to the regular X guard. The sweep from here is one that I get almost as often as the Twist Sweep we covered in lesson 3.
This transition is also something you developed in the core drill we covered in lesson 2; do you see how this is all beginning to hook together?
As you connecting more techniques the entirety of the Single Leg X starts becoming much more than the sum of its parts!
