The Collar-Sleeve is a classic Closed Guard grip where you control your opponent’s sleeve with one hand (typically around the elbow) and get a cross-grip on the collar with your other hand.

The push-pull force that you can generate here is incredible, and there are a TON of effective attacks you can launch.
(In the fourth Spider Guard app Elliott teaches no less than SIX variations of the omoplata, just from this one position. Plus a bunch of sweeps, triangles and other attacks. So you’ve truly got a lot of difficult-to-block options from here!)
The Spider-Collar variation sounds similar but is quite a different position…
In this variation you control only one sleeve of your opponent, and use your free hand to control the lapel.
So one of your feet is on his bicep, but the other foot is free to post on the ground, hook his legs, kick out his base, etc.
This makes it a lot easier on the grips than the conventional Spider Guard, and really allows you to move your opponent around.
This ability to move your opponent around then sets up your submissions, including the famous kneebar that Braulio Estima used at the 2013 World Championships (yes, we’ll show you exactly how to do this kneebar too).
The Reverse de la Riva position isn’t often thought of in a Spider Guard context, but it’s such a powerful counter to many of the most common guard passes that competitors have started combining the two positions.
A Reverse de la Spider if you will…
But you’ll learn that the Reverse de la Riva isn’t just a defensive position – there are some very powerful sweeps and back takes that you can launch from here that are very difficult for your opponent to block.
